Discovery Trail was conceived in 1999 as a regional mulitmodal (bike and pedestrian) trail that connected Knappton with Long Beach. The overal route is about 27 miles in length. The west segment that connects the City of Long Beach with the Town of Ilwaco. This segment passes through the Cape Disappointment State Park and future Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission plans include connecting the Isthmus area and North Head road with Discovery Trail at Beard's HollowThis image shows planning segments for the easterly segment of the trail. The middle section has not been planned for as now. The easterly segment is divided into four sub areas. The numbering system represents a proposed plan for priority of trail construction. Area 1 would be first, followed sequentially by 2, 3, and 4.
- Area 1 is from Fort Columbia to US 101 Mile Marker 1 (just west of the Sundowner RV Park) and includes Station Camp Middle Village park area (Station Camp Unit of the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park).
- Area 2 is from US 101 Mile Marker 1 to the Dismal Nitch Safety Rest Area (Dismal Nitch Unit of the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park.
- Area 3 is from Fort Columbia to Chinook County Park.
- Area 4 is from Dismal Nitch Saftey Rest Area to Knappton Sawmill historic site and includes the Knappton Cove Heritage Center.
